BEMÆRK: Ansøgningsfristen er overskredet

The Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (SDU-DME) invites applications for one fully-funded PhD scholarship in topology optimisation for high heat flux cooling. The position is expected to start from 15th of October 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter. The application deadline is the 14th of August 2023.

What we offer

The PhD project will focus on the development of numerical methods and software for topology optimisation of high heat flux cooling. The applications in mind are advanced cooling solutions for fusion reactors (~10 MW/m^2) and high energy-density electronics (~1 MW/m^2). The PhD project will use topology optimisation to design cooling channel layouts and tube inserts for enhanced heat transfer. This will involve turbulence and potentially two-phase flow, placing the research project at the cutting-edge of the field. You will assist in the development of a new in-house code for conjugate heat transfer topology optimisation using unstructured meshes and parallel computing.

Research environment
You will join the ‘Multiphysics Simulation and Optimisation’ (MSO) research group at SDU Mechanical Engineering (SDU-ME) in Odense. The research of the MSO group is focused on development of simulation and topology optimisation methods for multiphysics and conjugate heat transfer problems, but also covers thermomechanic process simulations such as casting and welding amongst others. The research activities at SDU-ME spans widely from fluid mechanics, condition monitoring, machine learning, fatigue, maritime structures, to multiphysics simulation and optimisation. SDU-DME is a multidisciplinary department, covering high-frequency electronics, super-capacitors, additive manufacturing, and energy technologies, in addition to the aforementioned. The department is an exciting environment, where you will be exposed to many different fields and have your general academic curiosity stimulated.

What we expect
The scholarship is full-time and the position is in-person only, where you are expected to work primarily on-campus. Foreign candidates are expected to relocate to Denmark.

Prior to the 15th of October 2023, you must have fully graduated a M.Sc. degree in a relevant discipline (mechanical/aerospace/nuclear engineering, applied mathematics, physics, etc.). If you have not graduated at the time of application, please include a statement from your Master thesis supervisor on expected passing and graduation.

You are expected to be proficient in numerical methods and programming thereof, as well as have experience with three or more of the following:

  • Mathematical optimisation theory
  • Fluid dynamics and heat transfer theory
  • Finite difference, volume and/or element methods
  • Computational fluid dynamics
  • Conjugate heat transfer simulations
  • Multiphysics simulations
  • High heat flux cooling applications
  • Topology optimisation
  • Parallel programming

Experience with programming in C/C++ and Python is preferred, but Matlab, Julia or Fortran are acceptable.

The working language of the MSO group is English, so you will be expected to have a documented working level of written and spoken English.

You will be expected to contribute to the teaching activities of the department through acting as teaching assistant, exercise instructor, and/or co-supervisor of students. Contributing to teaching of courses might be relevant depending on experience and conditions.

Conditions of employment
Applicants are required to have a master’s degree (equivalent to a Danish master's degree) at the time of enrollment and employment. Employment as a PhD fellow is a 3-year salaried position (start salary amounts to approx. 3.378,- EURO per month incl. supplements).

Employment of a PhD fellow can only happen after the Head of the PhD School has approved the candidate for admission to the PhD school. Employment and enrollment will cease without further notice at the end of the period.

A PhD fellow is not allowed to have any kind of sideline employment, while enrolled as PhD fellow at the faculty.

Employment is governed by the Protocol on PhD Research Fellows signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Please check links for more information on salary and taxation.

The successful candidate will be enrolled at SDU in accordance with Faculty regulations and the Danish Ministerial Order on the PhD Programme at the Universities (PhD order), read more here.
