BEMÆRK: Ansøgningsfristen er overskredet

SDU Robotics, part of the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Institute, University of Southern Denmark (SDU), invites applications for a PhD position, where the candidate will design and implement solutions for planning in-hand manipulations. The position will be vacant from 1 September 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter, and is for a 3-year period.

Research environment

The candidate will be integrated in the section SDU Robotics, which is a team of approx. 65 employees, specialized in research and development of robot solutions within the welfare, industrial and medical domain. We value teamwork, professional diligence, enthusiasm for robotics and the drive to adopt new skills and extended responsibilities. We offer an open, international team with flexible work organization and support of individual development.

SDU Robotics is involved in a variety of national and European projects and features a strong network of academic and industrial partners. The aim of the group is to solve challenging research problems derived from real-life challenges by implementing novel robot solutions. We participate in implementing the achieved results in real solutions with end users as Universal Robots, LEGO, Terma and Novo Nordisk.

SDU Robotics is part of the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Institute, University of Southern Denmark (SDU), and located at the main Campus in Odense, at the core of the Odense Robotics Cluster involving 120+ startups and established companies in robotics.

Project description

Human-like in-hand manipulation of objects is one of the key challenges in robotics as it would reduce system complexity and programming time of robotics applications involving pick and place of objects. In this PhD project, the focus is on planning in-hand manipulation of objects with known geometry. The planning will take place on a constrained subset of a high dimensional space. There are several challenges with this, including finding an efficient mathematical representation of this subset; establishing roadmaps using kinodynamic local planners; connecting the initial configuration to the roadmap. It is an important part of the project to ensure robustness of the derived trajectories to pose uncertainties.

Profile and requirements

The candidate will participate in SDU Robotics’ comprehensive research and teaching activities within the area of robotics, control and mathematical modeling. The position requires a master’s degree within a relevant area and the candidate is expected to have a profound knowledge on the majority of the following topics:

  • Robot modeling and control.
  • Strong background in Mathematics and Computer Science.
  • C++ programming

Furthermore, the successful candidate is expected to:

  • Have excellent knowledge of English (written and spoken).
  • Be able to work well and communicate expert knowledge in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Have the ability of working independently and has a strong sense of responsibility.
